Goal of the conference

In response to the challenges facing biodiversity and wildlife, this conference aims to shed light on the critical roles played by the Natural History Research Center and Museum at the University of Baghdad. As a national hub for the identification and validation of animal, plant, and geological specimens, the center serves as a vital resource for various Iraqi scientific and research institutions. The conference will focus on the latest developments in biodiversity and wildlife conservation, with a view to establishing foundational principles for sustainable development, and harmonizing efforts based on a national database to support decision-makers with the necessary research outcomes and recommendations. The conference will also address the preservation of biodiversity, compiling lists of extinct, endangered, invasive, and alien species in Iraq.

Given these aims, the Second International Conference on Natural History and Wildlife seeks to enhance the interactive collaboration between scientific and research institutions, both within Iraq and internationally, fostering a scientific environment that will contribute to the long-term goals of researchers and environmental advocates. The ultimate aim is to ensure the protection and balance of the environment in the face of rapidly changing ecological dynamics.

About Iraq Natural History Research Center and Museum

The Natural History Research Center and Museum at the University of Baghdad (http://nhm.uobagdad.edu.iq) was founded on May 2, 1946, and initially comprised four scientific departments: Entomology and Invertebrates, Ichthyology, Vertebrates, and Plant Science and Ecology. This esteemed institution is dedicated to conducting advanced research and specialized studies in natural history and wildlife conservation. It also plays a central role in identifying and validating specimens submitted by various Iraqi and international scientific and research organizations.

Since its inception, the center has been committed to preserving biological and geological collections, working to catalog species for long-term sustainability, conducting extensive field and ecological surveys, and presenting a selection of these collections in an engaging and educational manner for visitors and wildlife enthusiasts.

Furthermore, the center actively contributes to the advancement of biodiversity and wildlife conservation through the publication of its peer-reviewed scientific journal, the Bulletin of the Iraq Natural History Museum. First published in 1962, the journal continues to serve as a key platform for disseminating research in the fields of biodiversity and natural history and is indexed in Scimago for its scholarly significance.
